Noida: The CBI has arrested two people over the disappearance of ₹10.24 crore from accounts at a Punjab National Bank branch in Greater Noida.
Those held are Deepanshi, an office assistant at the bank, and Ashutosh Kumar Pathak, described by the agency as her associate. Pathak was arrested in Pune and produced before a court there on Tuesday, which granted transit remand. The location of Deepanshi's arrest has not been confirmed.
According to the CBI, Deepanshi conspired with Pathak and unidentified others to withdraw money from customers' accounts and transfer it elsewhere. The debits were made without the account holders' authorisation or the bank's approval.
The agency registered a case on October 29 after a complaint. Investigators suspect that the accused used the logins of bank officials.
Account holders say money was pulled from savings accounts and fixed deposits without their knowledge. Some allege their mobile numbers and email IDs were changed so that transaction alerts never reached them.
Initial complaints put the alleged fraud at more than ₹35 crore, while the CBI's FIR cites ₹10.24 crore. Account holders claim the irregularities ran for about three years.
Since the matter surfaced, the bank has begun returning money to affected customers. Account holders had also protested outside the branch.
The agency's FIR describes a conspiracy to pull money out of customer accounts and move it elsewhere, with debits made without the account holders' authorisation or the bank's approval.
Investigators are also examining how the logins of bank officials came to be used, which is central to the case.
The CBI said its investigation is continuing, and that the two accused are being questioned to establish which accounts received the money and whether others were involved.
