Jaipur: Rajasthan Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra began an overnight sit-in at the Jaipur police commissionerate on Monday, after a city police station refused to register a complaint by NSUI leader Ritu Barala over an alleged assault.

Dotasra camped at the commissionerate demanding that an FIR be registered. The protest continued on Tuesday.

The Congress leader's action came after Rahul Gandhi asked Dotasra to pursue legal action over the alleged assault on Barala, who hails from Rajasthan.

The sit-in at the police headquarters is the latest flashpoint between the Congress and the state's BJP government, which has been under opposition pressure on law and order and other issues.

The protest has drawn attention to the handling of complaints by local police stations, with the Congress alleging that its workers are being denied a fair hearing.

The state is headed for panchayat elections, and political temperatures have been rising. Earlier this week, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot said Rajasthan's drought was being ignored and demanded cattle camps and fodder, alleging that thousands of cows had died in Jaisalmer district and asking why the BJP government was not seeking help from the Centre.

The Congress and the BJP have been trading charges ahead of the local body and panchayat polls, with both sides seeking to frame the contest around governance and welfare.

Rajasthan's panchayat elections are being held in phases and the political atmosphere has heated up. The Congress has kept up pressure on the government over law and order, drought relief and welfare schemes.
