Jaipur: Demanding an FIR against a Delhi Police woman constable accused of assaulting NSUI leader Ritu Barala during a protest in Delhi, the Rajasthan Congress staged an overnight dharna at the Jaipur Police Commissionerate.
Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra and other party leaders staged the dharna at the commissionerate's premises on Monday night. After police failed to register the case, the leaders slept in the commissionerate's corridor, extending their protest into Tuesday.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is said to have asked Dotasra to pursue legal action over the alleged assault. Barala, who hails from Rajasthan, was allegedly assaulted during a demonstration in the national capital, an incident that has heated up the state's politics.
The Congress has kept up its demand for an FIR while pressing its case through legal channels. The party said the protest remained peaceful.
The protest came after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi asked Dotasra to pursue legal action over the alleged assault. Ritu Barala, who hails from Rajasthan, was allegedly assaulted by a Delhi Police woman constable during a demonstration in the national capital. Party leaders said they would continue the protest until the FIR is registered, and the overnight dharna drew attention on social media.
The Congress has linked the alleged assault to what it calls an attack on democratic rights, and party leaders said they would press the matter both in Jaipur and in Delhi. The overnight protest drew a number of party workers to the commissionerate through the night. Barala was among those taking part in a protest in the capital when the alleged assault took place.
